Trip Overview:

This 7-day Argentina self-drive vacation takes you through Argentine Patagonia from Puerto Madryn to El Calafate. It is a great way to explore the beautiful wilderness of Patagonia.

Your journey begins in Trelew, Argentina, where you’ll collect your rental car and begin your self-drive through Argentine Patagonia. End your first day in Puerto Madryn, a coastal resort town in northeastern Patagonia. Spend two nights based in Puerto Madryn, exploring the Valdes Peninsula, which is known for its stunning beaches and large colonies of sea lions and elephant seals living along the coast. You may even spot migrating whales in the Atlantic waters. Continue south and visit the Punta Tombo Penguin Rookery, where up to half a million Magellanic Penguins nest between September and April. Spend the night in the coastal city of Comodoro Rivadavia on the San Jorge Gulf before continuing along Route 40 into the Patagonian steppe.

Cross a landscape of imposing emptiness, where rocky plateaus and sparse vegetation are all you can see for dozens of kilometres in every direction. Reach Lago Posada and Lago Pueyrredon, where you’ll be blown away by the vibrant colours of the waters. Spend the night on the banks of the lake before continuing south towards El Calafate and crossing into Patagonia Park to admire the scenery of 300m-high rock walls and spot Patagonian wildlife such as the llama-like guanacos. Reach El Calafate, where you’ll spend two nights and head on a tour of Perito Moreno Glacier, one of the world’s largest glaciers and the only advancing glacier in the world. Watch the ice calve from the massive glacial face and stand in awe of nature’s power.

You’ll then return to El Calafate, where your tour ends, but consider extending your stay in Patagonia with a trip into Chile to visit Torres del Paine National Park.
