Set foot on the site where Portuguese explorers first discovered the island and embark on a tranquil hike through the verdant farmlands adorned with an array of vegetable patches, orchards, and colourful blooms.

Continue to Câmara de Lobos in the southwest and indulge in the island’s rich vinicultural heritage as you explore renowned wineries.

Sample exquisite fresh local white wines renowned for their tropical aromas as well as delicious reds and roses. Discover the storied past of the region and the owners of the estate as you navigate scenic vineyards en route to another winery in San Vicente.

On your final day, visit São Vicente on the North Coast, known for its vineyards, volcanic caves, and Madeira wine. Explore Seixal’s lava pools and the famous Véu da Noiva waterfall and swim at Porto Moniz's natural volcanic pools. Head to the Laurissilva Forest, one of Portugal's 7 Natural Wonders. Afterward, ascend to Paúl da Serra, the island’s highest plateau and finally, you will visit Cabo Girão, Europe’s highest sea cliff, featuring a glass-floored viewpoint.

Funchal has a wide selection of resort hotels where watersports, golf and tennis are popular. Visitors can tour the 15th-century cathedral, orchid gardens of Quinta das Cruzes, and buildings associated with Christopher Columbus. Madeira’s discoverer, Zarco, is believed to have lived in the house Quinta das Cruzes. Now it displays furniture and paintings and is surrounded by fabulous gardens. The stunning 15th-century design of Sé Cathedral features white stucco with contrasting black basalt and red tufa rock; the ceiling is inlaid with ivory. Located near Town Hall, the Museum of Sacred Art contains art from several islands, including a group of 15th- and 16th-century paintings of Portuguese and Flemish schools. Visit colorful Mercado dos Lavradores during the morning to see flower vendors and fish and produce stands.
