Balestrand Balestrand Long known for its arts and crafts, Balestrand lies on the northern rim of the Sognefjord, at the junction of the Vetlefjord, the Esefjord, and the Fjaerlandsfjord. Various writers and painters have included Balestrand in their work, and this work became so popular regular visitors started to flock to Balestrand to take in the glories of the area for themselves. Most visitors base in Balestrand to explore the mighty Sognefjord, one of the greatest and most impressive -- also one of the deepest -- in the world, stretching for a total length of 127 miles. It spreads its powerful "fjord fingers" as far as Jostedalsbreen, the country's largest glacier, and to Jotunheimen, Norway's tallest mountain range. Its greatest depth is 4,291 ft. The widest and most dramatic part of the fjord stretches from the coast to Balestrand. In late spring, thousands upon thousands of fruit trees can be seen in full bloom along both banks of the Sognefjord. The entire district is ideal for skiing, sailing, mountain hiking, and other outdoor activities.
Oslo Oslo Oslo, Norway’s capital and largest city, is encircled by wooded hills and snowcapped peaks. The city displays a mixture of several architectural styles.
